The Story of Stories: Star Wars

500px-star_wars_logo-svgIn my last post, I talked about the middle and high school class I’m teaching for our homeschool co-op about how all stories point to God’s Great Story. In our second class (there will only be six, by the way), we talked about Star Wars and the story it’s telling. Here’s the audio from the class.

The Story of Stories

At our homeschool co-op, I’m teaching a six-week class based on some thoughts I shared a while back about the one big story of Scripture. Here’s the class description:

Class: Slay the Dragon, Get the Girl: How All Stories Point to the Truest Story

Description: This class will examine different popular epic stories from the last century to show how every good story is a shadow (both negatively and positively) of God’s Great Story. We’ll examine books (i.e. Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia), comic books (i.e. Superman, Batman, Avengers, Spider-Man), and movies (i.e. Star Wars, Star Trek) to help illustrate this point as part of a discussion on topics like good vs. evil, sacrifice, rescue, redemption, battle, endurance, and salvation. Prior knowledge of some or all of the material in the class is not necessary. Please note that we may occasionally watch video clips that, while NEVER containing foul language or sensual dress/behavior, may include action violence (up to PG-13). If this is an issue, please let me know and we can work out alternate arrangements as the videos will only be a small part of the class.

I thought it would be a cool way to take my massively nerdy interest in epic stories and comic book heroes, and point it all back to Jesus. 🙂

Interestingly, in the first class, I thought the review of God’s big story would be a gimme–but it wasn’t. So we spent quite a lot of time tracing that out for the students before getting to our first topic of Star Wars.

Here’s the audio from the first class.
